Year 1 pupils at St Mary’s Newton Aycliffe recently took part in an exciting learning experience inspired by the much‑loved story Supertato. After enjoying the book together, the children set off on a fruit and vegetable hunt to Tesco, bringing the story to life in a fun and engaging way.

During the visit, the children carefully spotted and identified a wide range of fruits and vegetables, just like the characters in Supertato. They enjoyed talking about the different items they found and discussing which ones might help Supertato save the day, helping to develop both their vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Back in school, the shopping was put to excellent use in Maths lessons as the children began learning about mass. Using the fruit and vegetables they had collected, Year 1 explored weighing items, comparing which were heavier or lighter, and explaining their ideas using mathematical language. This practical, hands‑on activity helped deepen their understanding and confidence.

The Super Veg Adventure was a fantastic example of linked learning across English and Maths, allowing pupils to apply their knowledge in a meaningful and memorable way. Experiences like this help make learning exciting and ensure key concepts are understood through real‑life contexts.

A brilliant adventure for our Year 1 children and a great way to bring stories and maths together at St Mary’s Newton Aycliffe!
