Our Reception children at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Newton Aycliffe enjoyed a wonderful visit to church this week, deepening their understanding of faith through hands‑on exploration and meaningful discussion.
The children took part in a fun and engaging ‘I Spy’ church hunt, searching for special items used during Mass and other church celebrations. With curious eyes and excited voices, they spotted:
- The altar
- The Baptismal font
- The crucifix
- Hymn books
- The Paschal candle
Each discovery helped them learn more about the important objects that form part of our Catholic worship.
Father John welcomed the children warmly and explained how each item is used in the celebration of Mass. He also showed them his different coloured vestments and the chalice, helping the children understand how priests prepare for liturgical celebrations throughout the year.
As the children gathered around the Paschal candle, they reflected on Jesus’ words: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). They spoke beautifully about how Jesus guides us and brings light into our lives.
Father John then led the children around the Stations of the Cross, sharing the story of how Jesus died for us. Reception listened respectfully as they learned about Jesus’ courage and love. Together, they reflected on the verse:
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
The children agreed that Jesus was incredibly brave and showed great love for everyone.
This thoughtful visit gave Reception a deeper understanding of their faith, helped them recognise key symbols in church, and encouraged reflective conversation. A big thank‑you to Father John for his warmth, teaching, and guidance.
