“The Earth is our common home and we are called to protect it for the good of all.”

Inspired by Laudato Si’

Caring for Our Common Home at St Mary’s

At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we take seriously Pope Francis’ call in Laudato Si’ to care for our common home. We believe that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and an important part of living out our faith.

What we do:

  • Tree Planting: Together with our families, we have planted trees on our school grounds, creating spaces that will benefit future generations.
  • Community Gardening: A local parishioner and grandparent serves as our dedicated resident gardener, helping us nurture our outdoor spaces.
  • Gardening Club: Led by Mr Darby, our regular gardening club gives children hands-on experience in growing and caring for plants.
  • Litter Picks: We frequently organise litter-picking sessions to keep our school and local area clean and beautiful.
  • Eco Leadership: Our Children’s Leadership Team includes an Eco Leader, Jed, who is a passionate advocate for environmental issues and inspires others to take action.

Through these initiatives, we aim to live out the message of Laudato Si’, fostering respect for creation and encouraging our pupils to become responsible stewards of the Earth.
